See For Yourself! Philly Drag Queens Compete in Drag Wars

Where else could you go and see Cher, Madonna, Britney Spears and Liza with a “Z”? (Not to be confused with Lisa with a “S”)? Unless you eat something weird before bed, the closest you’ll come is a drag show.

Drag shows in Philadelphia offer a lot of original talent that goes beyond a celebrity impersonation.

Drag Wars Cycle 2, hosted by Mimi Imfurst and co-produced by Brandon Robert, is a competition hosted every Tuesday night at Voyeur nightclub. It’s a mix between RuPaul Drag Race, a show Mimi Imfurst competed on twice, and the Voice. For $7 you get a look at some of the newest and most creative drag queens.

This week the contestants brought their best Red-carpet looks and celebrity impersonations. There were your standard drag icons like Liza (Maria Top Cat) and  a Whitney Houston (Mercedes Monroe). But like Lady Poison’s (Cycle 1 winner) impersonation of Dora the Explore last year – there were also some unexpected faces like Miss Piggy (Brooklyn Ford) and R2D2 who transformed into Oscar the Grouch (Saline).

During the red-carpet runway portion of the show the queens showed fashions made out of unusual materials like Maria Top Cat’s trash bag dress and Saline’s WaWa coffee cup dress.
