Where else could you go and see Cher, Madonna, Britney Spears and Liza with a “Z”? (Not to be confused with Lisa with a “S”)? Unless you eat something weird before bed, the closest you’ll come is a drag show.
Drag shows in Philadelphia offer a lot of original talent that goes beyond a celebrity impersonation.
Drag Wars Cycle 2, hosted by Mimi Imfurst and co-produced by Brandon Robert, is a competition hosted every Tuesday night at Voyeur nightclub. It’s a mix between RuPaul Drag Race, a show Mimi Imfurst competed on twice, and the Voice. For $7 you get a look at some of the newest and most creative drag queens.
This week the contestants brought their best Red-carpet looks and celebrity impersonations. There were your standard drag icons like Liza (Maria Top Cat) and a Whitney Houston (Mercedes Monroe). But like Lady Poison’s (Cycle 1 winner) impersonation of Dora the Explore last year – there were also some unexpected faces like Miss Piggy (Brooklyn Ford) and R2D2 who transformed into Oscar the Grouch (Saline).
During the red-carpet runway portion of the show the queens showed fashions made out of unusual materials like Maria Top Cat’s trash bag dress and Saline’s WaWa coffee cup dress.
Don’t believe me? See for yourself….
Pictures do not do this show justice. It is a must see.
Next week the queens will be sporting their 90’s club wear.
And if you just can’t get enough of these queens, Philadelphia and Atlantic City offer tons of drag entertainment!
